Chapter 14: UnDead Girl by Stephen Simpson
Mya looked at Genesis. “You are number one. You opened your
eyes first. According to Doctor Mathison...”
Genesis asked, shocked, “He’s here?”
“He’s
the lead scientist on the project.”
Genesis blinked several times to stop her tears from
escaping. The lead scientist on the project? Was she always just a subject to
him? A thing created in a lab? Did he ever love her? Why had she not seen him
yet? He could have reassured her, made her feel safe, and he could not even be
bothered. “Continue,”
Genesis told Mya, “According to Doctor Mathison…”
“He
said you are the first of our kind.”
“My
understanding of the little I had been told was that we opened our eyes, only
seconds apart, why would we have certain names like Genesis and Finn, or even
numbers?”
Mya laughed a sad sound. “Well, we needed names to live
outside these walls and in here all we basically are, is a number.”
Genesis pulled her face in a sour grimace. “I guess you’re
right. Who’s second?”
“Eli.
Then Nolan, me, Julius, Gregory, Amelia, Cornelius, Crystal, and Finn.”
Genesis fell onto her back and stared up at the ceiling with its big square fluorescent lights and vents. “It’s kind of scary, don’t you think?”
